Getting started

From license to first capture

  1. Request a license or an evaluationUse the evaluation form or request a license. We reply by email.
  2. InstallWe send a password-protected build: an installer or portable build for Windows x64, an AppImage or deb for Linux x64. macOS is coming soon.
  3. ActivateAt first launch, paste your license key or load the license file. Activation is a one-time step that needs an internet connection (offline licenses do not). After that, a standard license checks the date online once at startup.
  4. Open a captureDrop in a .pcap or .pcapng file, or choose Load example capture to look around first.

Licensing

Do I need an internet connection to activate?
Once. Frame Bench asks our server for the key that unlocks a standard license the first time you activate it, sending only the license ID and a random identifier for the installation. After that it checks today's date online each time the app starts and keeps working offline for 3 days between checks. For machines that are never online, ask for an offline license, which needs no connection at all.
Can I use Frame Bench on an air-gapped machine?
Yes. Ask for an offline license when you buy or contact us. It never makes any network request. Standard licenses need to reach our date server now and then.
What does the startup date check send?
One request to framebench.ca, and nothing about you or your files: no license key, name, email, capture or device information. The reply is just the current time. See the privacy statement.
How many machines and users does a license cover?
Analyst, Crafting and Complete licenses cover one user on one machine and are not transferable without our approval. For several users, contact us about multi-user and volume licenses.
What happens when my license expires?
Frame Bench stops working at the end of the license term. The minimum term is one year. During the term you get support, updates and new releases. Renew to keep using it.
I replaced my computer or it failed. Can I move my license?
Yes. Contact us and ask for a reactivation. We may ask for proof of purchase and an explanation, and the number of reactivations per license is limited.
What is an evaluation license?
A time-boxed license for trying Frame Bench. It is for evaluation only, not commercial or production use, and it does not include updates. Netomize grants evaluations at its sole discretion. Request one.
Which features are in which tier?
The pricing section lists them. Analyst covers viewing, editing and analysis. Crafting adds the packet builders, Craft lab, batch apply and address rewriting. Complete adds decrypted TLS and QUIC export.

Privacy

Does Frame Bench send my captures anywhere?
No. Nothing you load is ever sent anywhere, and the app has no telemetry. See the privacy statement.
Does it check for updates on its own?
It does not check for updates or send usage data. The only request it makes is the signed date check at startup (offline licenses make none). New releases are announced in the release notes and sent to licensed users.

Using Frame Bench

Is there a macOS version?
Not yet. macOS support is coming soon. If you want it, tell us so we know how many people are waiting.
Which files can I open?
Classic pcap and PcapNG captures, and raw-frames JSON exports. Fiddler SAZ and browser HAR files import as real, editable TCP and HTTP frames.
Can it capture live traffic?
No, on purpose. It edits and crafts captures you already have. Record with Wireshark or tcpdump, then open the file here.
Does editing a byte break checksums and lengths?
By default it does not. Auto-fix recomputes lengths and checksums after each edit, including the Ethernet padding case on short frames. You can turn it off in Preferences, and Health check scans the whole capture on demand.
Can I undo changes?
Yes. Undo and redo cover single edits and whole batch operations, and Revert all changed frames puts everything back the way it was loaded.
How do I handle very large captures?
Large-capture mode indexes the file instead of reading it whole, and loads only the frame range or filter you choose. Filtered exports stream straight to disk.
How do I keep my work?
Save a session file to restore frames, templates, rules and filters later. Autosave also keeps a recovery copy in case of a crash.

Support

How do I get help?
Licensed users get support by email. Write to support@framebench.ca or use the inquiry form.
A protocol I need is missing. What can I do?
Check the protocol coverage list, then tell us. You can also describe your own layouts as custom templates.
